At the riding school, you've probably heard riders having a debate about what a perfect saddle is. No one ever agrees and no consensus really emerges. But, finally, do you know the difference between a single quarter and double quarter saddle?

This difference can be seen in the thickness of the quarter and the positioning of the straps. In the long run, this aims to offer saddles adapted to certain equestrian practices. Ready to learn more?

Is the difference between single and double quarter saddles visible?

The main difference between a single quarter and a double quarter is their respective design. Experienced riders can even spot this difference at a glance.

A clear difference in thickness

The first major difference is the thickness of the material between a single quarter saddle and a double quarter saddle. There is no trick: the single quarter is less thick than the double quarter. Many riders point out that this difference is very interesting depending on the horse you want to ride.

In fact, single quarter saddles are ideal for riding a particularly muscular horse or one with a rounder belly. On the other hand, the double quarter saddle is interesting to fill the space that you can feel with your legs when you ride a thin horse. This difference is then both visible and easy to feel as soon as you start riding.

Single and double quarter saddles: the girths

The girth is the other major difference between a single quarter saddle and a double quarter saddle. Specifically, the single quarter model has its girth sewn directly into the thickness of the front block. This results in a girth that is durable in the long run, but may be uncomfortable for some riders due to its higher than average stiffness.

In contrast, the double quarter saddle has a thinner girth that is not directly sewn into the thickness of the two overlapping layers of leather. This improves the flexibility of the fit. Again, this difference in design changes the way the saddle is positioned on your horse's back. It will therefore directly influence your positioning on it.

What changes in comfort?

The differences between the single and double quarter saddles are not there for decoration, as you can imagine! So let's see what they can be used for.

A different positioning of the legs

Variations in the thickness of the flaps inevitably lead to a change in the position of your legs when you ride your horse. With the Arion double quarter saddles, riders with longer legs will gain support and therefore stability.

On the other hand, with the single quarter saddle, your legs will be placed further forward than with the other model of saddle, slightly modifying your center of gravity and your support. These different positions, depending on the number of quarters available on your saddle, allow you to practice different types of riding exercises but also to have a significantly different feeling.

An optimized feeling for the single neighborhood

The difference is mainly in the thickness. This offers a different experience if you choose one or the other. With the double quarter system, the greater thickness of the latter reduces the contact with your horse, thus reducing the ease of communication with him.

Conversely, choosing a single quarter saddle will improve contact if it is designed to your own dimensions. Coupled with our exclusive Shoulder Free technology from Arion HST, the thinner quarter thickness promotes freedom of movement for both the horse and rider.

In the short term, the chemistry between horse and rider is improved by optimizing freedom of movement and communication!

Single and double quarter saddles, why do it?

Thanks to a different positioning, an almost opposite design and a different feeling, the difference between single and double quarter saddles is also found in the types of riding for which they are intended.

Gain mobility on your saddle

If the single quarter saddle sometimes bothers riders, it is because it offers a freedom of movement that no double quarter saddle is able to provide. The single quarter saddle is looser, carried forward to support the rider and has a stability positioned on the front and rear blocks. The single quarter saddle is ideal for those who like to vary their equestrian movements.

The double quarter saddle offers the opposite, i.e. a stability that is foolproof, especially thanks to the seats that go with this thicker quarter system.

Uses on the other side of the world

Ideal for variations in movement and rhythm, the mono quarter saddle is then perfect if you are looking for a saddle to practice cross country in competition. The forward positioning of your legs is made to gain flexibility and stability during jumps. The double quarter design, on the other hand, is very versatile.

Often used for dressage, it allows beginners to obtain a great stability that reassures during the first hours of practice. But don't think that this model is only for beginners because many champions have chosen the double quarter design for endurance or show jumping competitions!
